| ¡@ | What is synaesthesia? Synaesthesia denotes the blending of the senses. People with synaesthesia experience unusual sensations (of colour, taste etc.) triggered by other, unrelated, sensory inputs. For example, someone might see colours when listening to music or the sounds of speech. More examples (e.g., tastes triggered by words) are given on our home page and in our FAQs. What are the aims of the research? Our aim is to understand the cognitive, developmental and biological basis of synaesthesia, and what this might tell us more about ordinary perception, thinking, memory and language. What is involved with taking part? We invite you to fill in a brief questionnaire, which can be downloaded here in WORD or PDF. You will be asked to describe any synaesthesia you think you may have. If these involve colour from language (letters, Chinese characters, words etc.) you will also be asked to describe your colours. Data protection. Your personal details (eg name, contact details) are protected by English law and the Data Protection Act (UK), and will not be disclosed to anyone outside our research group. In documents, we refer to your data only by initials. The research group is run by Dr JC Simner (http://www.psy.ed.ac.uk/people/jsimner/index_html). How long will it take, and can I drop out? The questionnaire takes approximately 5 to 20 minutes, from person to person. Sometimes we email a second time, for example if we need clarification about something you've written. You are entitled to drop out at any point, with no explanation required. If you have any further questions, please contact us: hung_wanyu AT yahoo.co.uk
